Application of 3D
3D is used for a lot of things in the modern day world. The main place where it is used, is in the media. It can simulate things that are otherwise impossible to do and be used to create immersive 3D worlds for entertainment purposes. 3D is slowly becoming more and more realistic.

3D in games
Most modern videogames use 3D in some form, although some genres and titles still remain 2D. The picture below is from a PC game called Crysis.
3D was an evolutionary stage of video games, and eventually it will reach real life graphics. It allows for more free movement and more immersive gameplay than 2D.

3D in Movies
Many films use 3D. Some have otherwise impossible action scenes in 3D, which blend back into real life after the action is over. Others are in full 3D. 3D is becoming more indistingushable from real life. Some films are starting to have 3D films the picture below is from a 3D movie called Beowulf. One would argue that once 3D becomes real life quality and it’s development costs low enough, it would replace standard filming as you would be able to capture real life movements and copy them into 3D. An advantage of 3D is the actor can look like whatever they want, which lends itself well to anything that would be difficult to make costumes for.

3D in Music
Some music videos use 3D in a similar way to movies, (for action scenes, totally in 3D etc.) The picture below is from a music video called Crazy Frog. Actual music isn’t 3D, its the video, so in a way its just an extension of 3D in Video/Films. It will advance at a similar pace to 3D Video, except perhaps it would be cheaper.

3D in Medicine
Modern Medicine also uses 3D. The picture below shows a 3D rendering of a procedure. The surgen is wearing head-mounted display that allows him to perform an Augmented-reality-guided laparoscopy. 3D in Medicine would allow for many types of new surgical operations. Another thing it allows for is teaching. Students can be trained with realistic 3D, so they can hone their skills without having to operate on a real person.
